An Optometrist is responsible for examining patients’ eyes, assessing vision, identifying eye-related conditions, and providing appropriate vision correction and eye-care advice.
Requirements
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Optometry (B.Optom) or equivalent qualification.
Registration: Valid professional registration/licence as required by the relevant local authority.
Experience: Freshers may be considered; 1–3 years of clinical/optical experience is an advantage.
Clinical skills: Good knowledge of refraction, subjective/objective vision testing, binocular vision, and basic eye-health assessment.
Technical skills: Ability to operate autorefractors, keratometers, tonometers, slit lamps, and other optometric equipment.
Patient care: Strong communication and counselling skills with a patient-focused approach.
Product knowledge: Understanding of spectacles, contact lenses, lens types, and basic optical products.
Documentation: Ability to maintain accurate patient records and clinical reports.
Personal qualities: Attention to detail, professionalism, teamwork, and willingness to learn.
Key Responsibilities
Perform comprehensive eye and vision examinations.
Assess visual acuity, refraction, binocular vision, and eye health.
Diagnose and manage common vision problems.
Prescribe and dispense spectacles and contact lenses.
Conduct pre- and post-contact-lens assessments.
Identify signs of eye diseases and refer patients to ophthalmologists when required.
Explain test results and recommend suitable treatment or vision-care solutions.
Maintain accurate patient records.
Provide guidance on eye health, hygiene, and preventive care.
Coordinate with optical and clinical teams to ensure quality patient care.
